Monday, May 4th, 2009

Although the sour economy is hitting every industry hard, including health care and nursing, there are things you can still do to advance your career. Yes times are tough for many even if they still have a job. Of course these people are fortunate and hope they can continue to stay working. While it should be a time to hunker down (pay off debts and save money) many LPNs of course would still like make more money by getting a better job or advancing their career.

Most people in the general public have heard that there is a nursing shortage. And of course those working as an LPN already know there is demand for RNs. As a result many have decided to return to school or are seriously considering it.

Demand for nurses will vary depending on where you live. So if you live in an area where demand is higher then returning to school may be a great idea. If you do not live in an area with a lot of demand, you still may what to consider going back to college if you would be willing to relocate or get your education and hope demand picks up in your location.

Returning to school is not a cake walk. It will require a commitment to succeed but you can do it. Even if you are short on time do not worry too much since you can use the Internet and LPN to RN programs that offer flexibility to help you complete your education. Now you can structure your studies around your work and family schedules.

Of course you can make more money by becoming a registered nurse and as a former licensed practical nurse your responsibilities will also change. While many do enjoy working as a licensed practical nurse many will later in their career decide to go back to a university because they want a career change but still want to work as a nurse.

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Growing up in the sixties was a radical time. One thing back then with respect to nurses was most if not all of them were women. That has changed significantly in the past several years with more and more men going on to become a nurse. Looking at it from a different perspective though you do see more women doctors know as well. Now the majority of nurses are still likely women and the majority of doctors are still likely men, but who knows what the future holds.

Nowadays more and more folks are tired of their old jobs and want to change to a new career. Due to the healthcare demands many people are deciding to go into nursing. It seems like every week or so you read in the paper about how there is a nursing shortage. As a result a lot of people are likely trying to job on board. Who knows when it will flip to there no longer being a shortage of nurses due the aging population in general.

People who do not plan on going to college for years and would like to start working sooner rather then later may want to become an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). Later in their career it is possible to return to school to complete an lpn to bsn online program. After that they may even consider an MSN program.

RNs who finished a nursing program and then later decided to return to school to advance their career will have some options also. One option would be to complete an online RN to BSN program. That would likely give them the chance to move into a management position someday.

The thing to remember is folks in the healthcare field have many different career options available to them. As far as the nursing shortage goes, no one really know for sure when it will end. Until it does nurses will likely have a good job waiting for them.
